about
The Microcosm series were works based on a single synthesis technique. This was a study in analog frequency modulation (FM) and was recorded in 1979. The image in my mind when I first conceptualized the piece was of cosmic bells about 100 light years in size.
The original recording was 4 channel surround, mixed down from eight tracks of source material using a pair of Ampex 350 series 4 track tape machines. Sound generation was done using a Moog modular synthesizer. The only modules used were VCOs, VCAs, ADSR envelope generators and mixers. Carriers were all single VCOs in the audible range. Six VCOs routed through mixer modules provided the programs. The program frequencies spanned from sub-audible to super-audible. Various waveforms were used. No filtering was applied.
